Spells have cast speed as travel speed, variable area of effect, targeting needs, fizzle characteristics, finicky hit boxes, various monster save and damage resistances/immunities...that's a big part of being a successful wizard.The wizard works in this sense like the others work, if you build for self-sufficiency and know how to handle yourself in that environment.
